Speaking at Vibrant Gujarat summit, Mukesh Ambani had revealed that Gujarat would be the first state where RIL would launch a new e-commerce platform which would be the joint project between the Jio and Reliance Retail which will empower 12 lakh shopkeepers in Gujarat.
Mukesh Ambani had hinted about JioMart in RIL’s 42nd Annual general meeting(AGM) in 2019. He had presented this venture as “ New Commerce” and said: “ Our pilot trials with thousands of merchants across multiple locations in the country established the premise of new commerce with a significant increase in sales and improvement in margins for the participating merchants. We are now getting ready to roll out the platform at a larger scale.
An official from JioMart told Moneycontrol on the condition of anonymity that their first pilot was done at the end of December 2019, they had selected kiranas in Thane, Kalyan, and Navi Mumbai wherein they had handed over POS machines and had explained to them how to use it. So, they had 5000-6000 active kiranas who went live for WhatsApp grocery shopping before the official launch.
Reliance has launched a pilot program for JioMart as “Desh Ki Nayi Dukaan” on its website before the launch of JioMart on 26 January. Under this pilot program, they were delivering within selected areas of Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, and Thane.

JioMart connects both last-mile neighborhood stores and consumers. It is also leveraging data and technology capabilities of Reliance’s telecom business Jio and the cash-and-carry the infrastructure of its retailing arm.

After signing a historic $5.7 billion deal with Facebook on April 22, Reliance Industries’ e-commerce platform JioMart is now live in Kalyan, Thane and Navi Mumbai near Mumbai.

Reliance is also working on rolling out a dedicated JioMart app for Android and iOS devices soon. Where users can place an order on JioMart via WhatsApp and collect them from the merchant when it is ready.
How this deal will benefit JioMart?
Jio will get direct access of 40 crores WhatsApp users and almost 3 crore Kirana store will be benefited through this deal. Reports suggest that online e-commerce in India is expected to grow seven-fold to $30 billion by 2028.
We know that in recent times trader body(The Confederation of All India Traders) CAIT is continuously protesting against the big e-commerce platform like Amazon and Flipkart because they are growing but on the sacrifice of Local stores but JioMart wants to grow by taking all the Kirana stores with his journey. Whatsapp will help JioMart into onboard Kirana stores rapidly.
Once a sizable set of stores will be added, JioMart will get access to a significant amount of data and by using AI, ML and analytics tools, JioMart will be in a position to provide insights for offering a personalized product to the consumers. This could also push the neighborhood Kirana stores to come up with innovative methods to attract consumers.

like Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and also from tier 1, tier 2 cities

Details of the sellers have not been disclosed on the JioMart website, JioMart is targeting their sales through local kiranas along with fulfilling the orders via its Reliance Fresh and Smart stores and also through distribution centers in the areas where sales through kiranas are not possible.
Currently, most of the orders are fulfilled via its Reliance Fresh, Smart, and through its distribution center. So, Is reliance missed the local Kirana stores?
